Different Seasons

There’s a television program I love to have playing in the background as I work on various tasks on my laptop. In fact it’s on right this very moment as I’m writing this devotional. This reality program is about a celebrity who gets married and moves away from her life of fame in Seoul to small an island called Jeju. After many years of paparazzi being curious what their life is like on this island, they decided to start a Bed and Breakfast and you get to experience life with them as different kinds of people come to stay there.

What I love about this program is seeing the different seasons on this beautiful island. In Summer, everything seems dry and humid. In winter, the trees have withered and are covered in snow, and in Spring, fields and fields of beautiful flowers and trees begins to blossom. It is absolutely breathtaking.

As Christians we will have seasons in our lives. We will have happy days and sad days, we will have times of good health and time of bad health. We will come across new friendships, and see other ones go. We will make our home in one place and then move to another location. We will have many great memories, but also have bad memories too. We will have smooth days, and we will have days where we wake up on the wrong side of bed. We will have days of peace and we will have days of conflict.

Despite all this, as Christians I believe that we are not to be like the flowers and trees we see in nature, that only yield in season. We are to be like a tree that is planted in streams of water. If we follow Christ and continue to grow in our love and knowledge of Him, then no matter what circumstances we face and no matter what season in life we go through, we will always be yielding fruit. As we remain close to Christ, and continue to read His word we’ll be thriving in all circumstances for the rest of our lives.

“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” John 15:4–7

Dear Heavenly Father,

Please help me to prioritising spending time in prayer, worship and reading Your word. Help me to be yielding fruit in every season.

In Jesus name I pray,

Amen
