Finding Food That Lasts For An Eternity

I love my food. When Rachel and I were overseas in Taiwan, that was what I did most of the time. I ate food. We joked that I only had one meal a day, it started at breakfast time and ended at dinner time. Food is great, it’s part of our daily routine. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. It’s part of our LORD’s creation and it’s a gift to us as it sustains us and we can enjoy it.

When we are hungry, we desire food. But there’s a type of food that we should really desire and which will last forever. I’m talking about the Word of God. When Jesus was confronted by the Israelites, they asked for loaves of bread. It’s because Jesus had just performed the miracle of feeding the five thousand with five loaves and two fish. Jesus’ response is interesting, he says,

Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal. - John 6:27

“What is this food?” They ask. Jesus replies that he is the food that gives eternal life.

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. - John 6:35

We eat food each day. But the food that lasts is Him! He is the bread of life. Here is the promise for those who are willing to come to him. He promises to give freely and he promises to give eternal life. He promises to quench our thirst and he promises to satisfy our hunger. Jesus is the one who satisfies our deepest desires. He is the one who provides eternal life and we are asked to believe in Him.

The question is, are we reminding ourselves that Jesus is the bread of life? Are we reading our Bibles in order to see that Jesus is the bread of life? Are we coming to him by faith, asking him to satisfy us? May we be encouraged whenever we eat breakfast, lunch or dinner that Jesus has freely given us himself as the food that lasts for eternal life. Let’s enjoy the food that the LORD has given us, but let’s also desire the food that lasts for all eternity.
